The Akita Association of Ireland
Code of Conduct/Ethics
The Akita Association as an affiliated member of the Irish Kennel Club has signed up to and will be subject to the Code of Conduct and Ethics of the Irish Kennel Club in the first instance.
In addition all members of the Akita Association of Ireland will also be required to comply with the following which are subject to amendment as and when ordered by the Akita Association of Ireland Committee:
- Will properly house, feed, water and exercise all dogs under their care and arrange for appropriate veterinary attention if and when required.
- Will agree without reservation that any veterinary surgeon who performs an operation on any of their dogs which alters the natural conformation of the animal, or who carries out a caesarean section on a bitch, may report such operations to the Irish Kennel Club.
- Will agree that no healthy puppy will be culled. Puppies which may not conform to the Breed Standard should be placed in suitable homes.
- Will abide by all aspects of the Animal Welfare Act currently in place or subsequently put in place in Ireland. (North and South)
- Will not through their actions by word or deed bring the Association or the IKC into disrepute.
- Will agree not to advertise their pups through commercial websites which are not moderated sufficiently to ensure that puppy farmers and commercial breeders are forbidden from advertising.
- Will not allow any of their dogs to roam at large or to cause a nuisance to neighbours or those carrying out official duties.
- Will ensure that their dogs wear properly tagged collars, are micro-chipped and kept leashed and under effective control when in a public place.
- Will clean up after their dogs in public places or anywhere their dogs are being exhibited.
- Will only sell dogs where there is a reasonable expectation of a happy and healthy life and will help with the re-homing of a dog if the initial circumstances change.
- Will supply written details of all dietary requirements and give guidance concerning responsible ownership when placing dogs in a new home.
- Will ensure that all relevant Irish/UK Kennel Club documents are provided to the new owner when selling or transferring a dog, and will agree, in writing, to forward any relevant documents at the earliest opportunity, if not immediately available.
- Will not sell any dog to commercial dog wholesalers, retail pet dealers or directly or indirectly allow dogs to be given as a prize or donation in a competition of any kind. Will not sell by sale or auction Irish/UK Kennel Club registration certificates as stand alone items (not accompanying a dog).
- Will not knowingly misrepresent the characteristics of the breed nor falsely advertise dogs nor mislead any person regarding the health or quality of a dog.
- Will not knowingly mislead the general public with false adverts or claims relating to show wins or the sale of puppies or any other matter that would falsely promote their kennel/breeding.
- Will not engage in the defamation or malicious gossip relating to other breeders/members of the club.
- Will not breed from a bitch under the age of eighteen months.
- Will not breed from a bitch on successive seasons but will allow a suitable time for recovery between matings. In special circumstances representation may be made to the committee for approval where a mating has not produced any pups/only one pup, and the bitch has been certified healthy and fit to be mated by a Veterinary Surgeon.
- Complaints regarding breaches of the above by a member should be made in writing to the Secretary for action in the first instance at committee level.
- Any member selling a pup must be prepared to supply advice and assistance on the pup to the new owner from cradle to grave if requested
Breach of these provisions may result in expulsion from club membership, and/or disciplinary action by the Irish Kennel Club.
