THE AMERICAN AKITA IN IRELAND
THE FIRST DECADE MARCH 2003 – MARCH 2013
Big brother bear or the “American Akita is the better known of the two breeds and is therefore more prolific in Ireland. It is however right to reflect on the American over the last decade since the breed split on St Patricks Day 2003. Having been established on the island for a lot longer, there are obviously more breeders, and it is safe to say that if the media hype about bear killing dogs etc is ignored for what it is (unfounded sensationalism) then this breed enjoys a good reputation as a family pet and great companion dog. There are a number of very good knowledgeable breeders on the island and their details can be accessed through the breed club, The Akita Association of Ireland. Anyone new to the breed and seeking to buy or even adopt from Akita Rescue Ireland is well advised to contact the club for good sound advice on “Living with an Akita.
