It is now ten years since the first show under the auspices of the Irish Kennel Club where there were separate classes for the Akita Inu (formerly known as The Japanese Akita Inu) took place on St Patricks Day 2003.

As the breed club, The Akita Association of Ireland decided to celebrate the first decade of the split between the American Akita and the Akita Inu by acknowledging those dogs which have received the accolade of Annual Champion. To this end we requested the relevant information from the IKC who hold all the authenticated records.  In fairness to the IKC their recording system only went fully computerised in 2007 so there may be the odd slight discrepancy for recording under the old Green Star/points system. It is safe to say that the breed is moving on, but would still be considered a Rare Breed with only about forty in the whole of Ireland, and numbers at shows rarely exceeding 8, and for this reason for the Inu we have highlighted the three Group 5 wins by Libertia , Kyokujitsu , and Razmus kennels . With the formation of the breed club to accommodate both breeds, we look forward to increasing the number and quality of dogs and to providing more challenging competition for the show fraternity.
